Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Too close to home? Am I nauseous because it's late or because Rise of the Planet of the Apes that I just paid $1.50 for was too close for comfort? Rupert Wyatt put the whole concept on speed, but while I watched the events unfold, I wondered just how close to the truth Rupert Wyatt, Rick Jaffa, and Amanda Silver (the producers of the movie) could actually be. After a few credits, we're left watching a disturbing scene where the infected neighbor is walking through the airport sneezing blood. Yuck and OMG in the same breath. I left thinking about the bird flu scare that flooded our news channels a few years back and had a new appreciation for the hype behind it.

I didn't realize that it was to be another 3000 years before the apes were discovered by astronauts that had been lost in space. I find it fascinating that we skip back to see the beginning of how the planet is changed by apes just as I find it interesting that the first 3 books of Star Wars was made into movies years after the second set of books.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I was supposed to try and keep this blog strictly on children's literature. I was terribly bored and felt like I was running in circles. Then I realized that most of my childhood stories that I grew up with were probably grownup stories tweaked just a bit for children. Why not scare my son's pants off with a little story about how apes take over the world? Sure, I won't give him the gory details, but since he loves scary stories, I could tone it down a bit. In the meantime, while I "blog", I can stretch out and just write about what goes on in my life.

Like watching movies late at night in Houston with my hubby and oldest daughter.
